If you are looking for ACT prep materials, Princeton Review materials are excellent. I enrolled in the instructors’ course for the Princeton Review SAT and found their test prep approach clear and digestible. I have taught SAT prep at a prep school here in Connecticut, worked for a private tutoring company, and tutor students in both SAT and ACT prep. Friends and neighbors have asked if I would tutor their teens for the ACT, so I purchased this book to teach the non-math sections. The explanations in Princeton Review test prep books are field tested with actual students. Princeton Review explains clearly how to think about the tests and the test questions.

What is helpful for students and parents to understand about the reading tests on the ACT is that on tests given in school teachers want to provide quality answers. Teachers are testing to determine that students studied the material. Students just have to identify the right answer–it’s more a test of did you learn the material?

The reading tests on the ACT are open book tests. The tests ask a question and the answer is right in front of you so they have to make it difficult to identify the answer. Because the reading tests on the ACT Test do not rely on your memory or knowledge base, they give you lousy answers, deceptive answers–sometimes you have to choose among the least worst answer. So, it takes strategy and knowing HOW the test company scrambles the answers in four different ways (distortion, switch, extreme answers and the "nice" answer) to lure students into the wrong answer. Once you know the ways they construct answers (there are only so many ways to do this), it is easier to spot the right answer.

About the Author

Peter is a New York and Los Angeles based photographer specializing in advertising and commercial work, including portraiture, fashion, beauty, editorial, actor's headshots, events and corporate photography. “Let me give you an idea of the round about way I picked up a camera and found a new love. It and most of my life revolve around the sport of sailing. In 1993 after graduating from Boston University I hadn't a clue as to what I was going to do with myself. That summer I was doing what I had done every summer since I can remember, racing sailboats. In August, I won a National Championship and decided to train for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. While training full time, a friend sent me to see a designer at Ralph Lauren, who was in search of real sailors to model in a Polo Sport advertising campaign. I had an incredible time and months later my picture was seen around the world. More importantly, I met a true friend and eventual mentor, Bruce Weber, who was the photographer on the shoot. Bruce continued to take pictures of me sailing and after failing to make the '96 US Sailing Team, I found myself in New York at the start of a new modeling career. Modeling led me into acting, but the dream of a gold medal still lingered in the back of my mind. After a few years, I dropped everything and decided to jump back in the boat and train for the Sydney '00 Games. It was during this time that Bruce encouraged me to start taking pictures of sailboats. My training paid off landing me a berth on the 2000 US Sailing Team. Shortly afterward, I took up the camera and while shooting a regatta I turned the camera on a fellow model/actor and friend of mine who had come along for the day. Those pictures ended up in his portfolio and created the outset of my new career. Since then my pictures have led me into advertising and my clients now include Levi's, Reebok, DKNY, Johnnie Walker and Axe Deodorant to name a few. I am continually growing as a photographer and I'm so glad that my crazy path has landed me here with a camera in hand. I would like to give a special thanks to Caggie Simonelli, Bruce Weber, and Josette Lata for making this possible.”

I got this book as a gift, and I’m halfway through reading it.

My thoughts so far: I’ve seen a couple of Mr. Hurley’s videos, and I guess you either like his personality or you don’t, but I tend to be wary of men who act like this, but that’s just me, and I’m sure the majority of his clients like what he does. In his book, Hurley is at least honest enough to refer to his act as his "shtick," but then comments that you have to be "authentic" about your shtick. Okay, I’ll take him at his word, this is really who he is and it works for him–I give kudos to anyone who can succeed in his business, in a world where "everyone is a photographer"–but I personally would be very uncomfortable around a photographer acting like this as he tries to "capture the real me." My advice is this: if you are not a hyper over-the-top type of a photographer, then don’t try to be one, just do what works for you. In all fairness, Mr. Hurley acknowledges that his "shtick" is not for everyone, and that people with different personalities are also more than capable of taking good pictures. I give him extra points for being clear about this.

It is nice that Mr. Hurley gives credit to Richard Avedon for inspiring his white background look. As far as cropping the top off of heads goes, I’m not sure if Mr. Hurley takes credit for this idea himself, but one look at any book by another white background photographer, David Bailey, will inform you that the "cropped head" look has been around for a long time. In all fairness, when it comes to photography, it is difficult to do anything truly original.

Flat lighting is fine, but I’m not particularly fond of Mr. Hurley’s lighting setup, as I think his catchlights look a bit off. Again, to Mr.
Peter Hurley is without doubt, one of the most sought after headshot photographers in the world. His diverse clientele ranges from A list actors and celebrities, to giants of business and industry, but don’t just take my word for it, find out for yourself. I have read this book from front to back a couple times now and find it a refreshing departure from traditional photographic instruction books. I’ve been reading the electronic version until my hard copy arrives.

Peter Hurley’s, The Headshot, is a book that will improve any photographers headshot technique. His images are fresh and timeless in their simplicity and sophistication. Hurley, through this book, gives of himself straight from his heart to the reader. He includes his personal journey from his beginnings as a headshot photographer to where he is now, which is essential to understanding his methodology, technique, and results. Those that are used to the style of more traditional, technical photographic instruction books would do well to approach this book with open minds and objectivity.

The Headshot is much more than setting lights, exposure and equipment. As a matter of fact, in my reading, I find that to be one of the most simple, basic principles he is conveying to his audience. Hurley’s real genius is apparent in his knowledge of the language of the face, how it moves, what micro expressions convey, both in person and in a photograph, moreover, the psychology in how to achieve that look consistently, one client at a time. Hurley shares his mastery of how to get inside one’s head to relax and forget about the camera and focus on the trust and dialogue between artist and subject. I firmly believe THAT is the essence of this book.
