ABOUT

The Atlantis World is an adventure across space and time that explores the history of the Atlantean homeworld and culture, a topic readers have asked about since the release of the first novel in the series, The Atlantis Gene. Fans of Dan Brown, Michael Crichton, Preston and Child, Robert Masello, and James Rollins are raving about the trilogy, giving it over 25,000 reviews on Amazon and nearly 100,000 ratings on GoodReads. This heart-stopping thriller is the third and final book in A.G. Riddle's Origin Mystery Trilogy, which is now complete.

Good thing I had read Departure first A slight improvement on the second novel, this third installment picks up the pace. The plotting moves very fast with many twists and turns, but every reveal just becomes more ridiculous. At each step, whatever the dilemma, every fix or solution is formed and executed unbelievably fast. There's also very little time spent on actual world building so any deux ex machina can be thrown in because the novel never establishes what the boundaries are, except for maybe cursory mentions after the fact. It basically just races through the plot to reveal the full mystery. In the end, this trilogy is mildly entertaining but definitely still comes off as an amateur attempt. It's interesting though that A.G. Riddle's next novel, Departure, is a HUGE leap forward in the quality and maturity of the writing. Good thing I had read Departure first, because if I had only read this trilogy, I would have written off this author and never bothered again. But Departure is written with such beautiful maturity that it gives me hope for future novels from Mr. Riddle.Wish I had stopped at The Atlantis Gene... Oh brother...while I was disappointed with book 2 of the Origin series, I completely hated this one. I nearly stopped listening to the audio book several times but figured I was so far invested in the series I needed to at least see it through...sorry I did. I only gave this book a 2 because the reading in the audio book version was still very good. This entire story in book three is seemingly likened to civil war stories between the Atlantians and all other alien and human life forces. It got real boring REAL quick. Where book 2 was disappointing, book 3 was barely tolerable. If you've read book one and book two, you'll remember that in book one the alien space ships had suspension/stasis tubes that healed and kept the inhabitants in suspension for hundreds to thousands of years and they awoke at the same age, just different times...in book 2, the tubes became resurrection/cloning tubes with varying outcomes for the inhabitants from multiple cloning of dead people/aliens to people exiting the tubes with just the memories of other dead aliens...in this book the memories are killing their hosts so our main characters traverse the galaxies via ancient spaceships, portals and worm holes. Too laughable to even comprehend...this goes on and on and ON... Interestingly enough, the humans in the group seem to have no adverse effects from space travel...no need for oxygen or any special protective equipment...they just pass from one spaceship, planet or space station through an alien portal and enter another. No harm, no foul.Oh, and in case you're wondering...Kate's presumed dead infant that she discovers is alive in book one, is never mentioned in book two...is once again mentioned in this book...briefly at the very end! No effort to find her own infant but a lot of effort to find missing memories of the alien whose partial memories were "cloned" into her. Seriously...All questions are answered This third book in the series is a radical departure from the first two novels. In it, we get all the answers. We learn about the Atlanteans and their destruction. We learn about Ares and his long-term goal to destroy those who wiped out the Atlanteans. We learn about Isis, the Atlantean researcher who saved humanity 70,000 years ago and began altering our genetic code.Human civilization is still reeling from the massive flood unleashed by Ares and is not much of a factor in the story.Throughout the book, Dorian Sloane (the embodiment of Ares) is chasing Kate Warner (the embodiment of Isis) and David Vale to kill them. At each stage in the pursuit, we learn more about the Atlanteans and the enemy that destroyed them. A new faction, the Exiles, also appears. While it's nice to have all the mysteries resolved and all the pieces of the puzzle revealed, most of the book is pretty much just a replay of the Atlantean memories of Ares and Isis. Sure, there's the ongoing chase between Dorian and Kate/David to add a bit of tension, and there's the climax where Ares' plan against the Serpentines comes to fruition, but in my opinion it isn't really that good of a book. Obviously you have to read it to get closure on the series, but... bleah.

Title: Talking to Strangers Pdf What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know

Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Revisionist History and number-one best-selling author of The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, David and Goliath, and What the Dog Saw, offers a powerful examination of our interactions with strangers - and why they often go wrong.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true?

Talking to Strangers is a classically Gladwellian intellectual adventure, a challenging and controversial excursion through history, psychology, and scandals taken straight from the news. He revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath, the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal at Penn State University, and the death of Sandra Bland - throwing our understanding of these and other stories into doubt. Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don't know. And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world. In his first book since his number one best seller, David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell has written a gripping guidebook for troubled times.

Doesn't deliver. As one reviewer mentioned, the Interlude and the section on Brock Turner are absolutely cringeworthy for a host of reasons. I too almost stopped reading before the I got to the first chapter, and now I'm sort of disappointed that I read all the way to the end. Fascinating facts are revealed in typical Gladwell fashion which keeps the pace moving. But he comes terribly short on providing any sort of value for actually talking to strangers. Gladwell basically says, "Hey! We suck at talking to strangers. Here's some interesting situations that prove my point. But I have no ideas on how to be better at talking to strangers.""We think we can easily see into the hearts of others based on the flimsiest of clues." Malcolm Gladwell is a gifted writer who engages our minds and emotions in his works of non-fiction. In "Talking to Strangers,” he tells us true stories that, at first, seem to be unrelated. A police stop ends in tragedy; Neville Chamberlain and other political figures famously misconstrued Hitler's bellicose intentions; experienced judges grant bail to defendants who, they realize too late, should have remained in jail; the sociopath, Bernie Madoff, conducted a fraudulent investment scheme for years, deceiving many individuals who thought that he was a genius at making money; Amanda Knox served prison time for a murder that she did not commit.Studies show that most of us who encounter apparently benevolent individuals are predisposed to believe that they are not putting on an act. Conversely, when we meet a man or woman who behaves weirdly or inappropriately, we are likely to jump to negative conclusions about him or her, even when there is little hard evidence to support our assumptions. The author suggests that many of us have an inflated opinion of our ability to size up people. Research suggests that we are not as objective as we would like to believe, and are therefore prone to misinterpret comments, intonations, facial expressions, and gestures. Moreover, we do not always realize that people whose backgrounds differ from ours may communicate in unfamiliar ways.Gladwell asks: How did double-agents who telegraphed their guilt get away with their treasonous behavior for so long? Why didn't everyone recognize Madoff for what he is—a ruthless swindler? Which of Amanda Knox's personality traits, remarks, and deeds convinced Italian authorities that she killed her roommate? These compelling examples raise intriguing questions about why we sometimes reach erroneous conclusions when we assess the truthfulness of our fellow human beings. it should be noted that a few chapters in this book—such as the essays on suicide, young adults who drink so heavily that they black out, and the efforts of police to cut down on crime—are thought-provoking but oversimplified and not particularly relevant to Gladwell's central premise. Still, this work of non-fiction is an entertaining and enlightening wake-up call. We should be cautious when we decide who our friends are as opposed to who is likely to stab us in the back. Too often we are dead wrong.Sadly, Gladwell places his foot in his mouth... Wow, does this book ever suffer from a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease!I almost didn’t make it past the introduction. In my pre-publication copy, Gladwell writes, “The Sandra Bland case came in the middle of a strange interlude in American public life” and then goes on to discuss a series of cases of police violence against black people that happened around 2014.“Strange interlude.” Really? That phrasing suggests that this treatment was some sort of aberration in American history and that the violence only happened during the few years he references. Did Gladwell really mean to ignore America’s long history of this problem?I don’t think so? I think he may have meant that the attention paid to police violence was unusual, but dude, choose your words much more carefully.Later on, there are some good points made about how and why we tend to misunderstand each other. But, again, I almost put the book down, this time while reading the chapter on the Brock Turner sexual assault case. Without going into detail, that chapter could only have been written by someone who's buried his head in the sand over the past five years or so.It’s tough to ignore the problematic elements of Talking to Strangers. I could definitely see the discussion of the causes of sexual assault offending some readers to the point that they abandon the book altogether. I’ve definitely enjoyed other books by the author a lot more than this one. Two stars. Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for giving me a DRC of this book.

Title: Limitless Mind Pdf Learn, Lead, and Live Without Barriers
Author: Jo Boaler
Published Date: 2019-09-03
Page: 256

“Boaler is one of those rare and remarkable educators who not only know the secret of great teaching but also know how to give that gift to others.”  (CAROL DWECK, author of Mindset)“Jo Boaler is one of the most creative and innovative educators today. Limitless Mind marries cutting-edge brain science with her experience in the classroom, not only proving that each of us has limitless potential but offering strategies for how we can achieve it.” (LAURENE POWELL JOBS) Dr. Jo Boaler is a professor of education and equity at Stanford University and the faculty director of youcubed—an education resource that has reached over 230 million students. She is the author of the first MOOC on mathematics teaching and learning, as well as nine mathematics books and numerous research articles. Her work has been published in the New York Times, TIME magazine, The Telegraph, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and many other news outlets. She was named by the BBC as one of eight educators “changing the face of education.” She lives in Stanford, California.

In this revolutionary book, a professor of education at Stanford University and acclaimed math educator who has spent decades studying the impact of beliefs and bias on education, reveals the six keys to unlocking learning potential, based on the latest scientific findings.

From the moment we enter school as children, we are made to feel as if our brains are fixed entities, capable of learning certain things and not others, influenced exclusively by genetics. This notion follows us into adulthood, where we tend to simply accept these established beliefs about our skillsets (i.e. that we don’t have “a math brain” or that we aren’t “the creative type”). These damaging—and as new science has revealed, false—assumptions have influenced all of us at some time, affecting our confidence and willingness to try new things and limiting our choices, and, ultimately, our futures.

Stanford University professor, bestselling author, and acclaimed educator Jo Boaler has spent decades studying the impact of beliefs and bias on education. In Limitless Mind, she explodes these myths and reveals the six keys to unlocking our boundless learning potential. Her research proves that those who achieve at the highest levels do not do so because of a genetic inclination toward any one skill but because of the keys that she reveals in the book. Our brains are not “fixed,” but entirely capable of change, growth, adaptability, and rewiring. Want to be fluent in mathematics? Learn a foreign language? Play the guitar? Write a book? The truth is not only that anyone at any age can learn anything, but the act of learning itself fundamentally changes who we are, and as Boaler argues so elegantly in the pages of this book, what we go on to achieve.

Finally a book so I can share Jo’s great ideas with parents and others! I’ve been a fan of Jo’s work for a long time and Mathematical Mindsets was a game changer for me, so I’m super excited to have a book that is not only math-teaching focused so I can share the powerful ideas with others!

ISBN: B07PZ2B85Y
Title: Super Pumped Pdf The Battle for Uber

A New York Times technology correspondent presents the dramatic story of Uber, the Silicon Valley startup at the center of one of the great venture capital power struggles of our time.

In June 2017, Travis Kalanick, the hard-charging CEO of Uber, was ousted in a boardroom coup that capped a brutal year for the transportation giant. Uber had catapulted to the top of the tech world, yet for many came to symbolize everything wrong with Silicon Valley.

Award-winning New York Times technology correspondent Mike Isaac’s Super Pumped presents the dramatic rise and fall of Uber, set against an era of rapid upheaval in Silicon Valley. Backed by billions in venture capital dollars and led by a brash and ambitious founder, Uber promised to revolutionize the way we move people and goods through the world. A near instant “unicorn,” Uber seemed poised to take its place next to Amazon, Apple, and Google as a technology giant.

What followed would become a corporate cautionary tale about the perils of startup culture and a vivid example of how blind worship of startup founders can go wildly wrong. Isaac recounts Uber’s pitched battles with taxi unions and drivers, the company’s toxic internal culture, and the bare-knuckle tactics it devised to overcome obstacles in its quest for dominance. With billions of dollars at stake, Isaac shows how venture capitalists asserted their power and seized control of the startup as it fought its way toward its fateful IPO.

Based on hundreds of interviews with current and former Uber employees, along with previously unpublished documents, Super Pumped is a page-turning story of ambition and deception, obscene wealth, and bad behavior that explores how blistering technological and financial innovation culminated in one of the most catastrophic twelve-month periods in American corporate history.

Not quite Bad Blood but decent - a 3.5 star read rounded up to a 4 Mike Isaac's book on Uber has probably one of the most appropriate titles of any tech book I've read recently. While an overall good first effort, the book doesn't live up to the high watermark set by John Carreyrou's Bad Blood on Theranos. The book truly shines in its later chapters: Isaac's blow-by-blow coverage of Uber founder Travis Kalanick's ouster kept me on the edge of my seat, as did his description of the successor CEO selection process. Isaac is without a doubt a stellar reporter, having unearthed a number of details I did not know from previous coverage of the (in)famous Silicon Valley company. He is thorough with the scopps and maintains a consistent voice throughout the book. There are definitely parts of the book that aren't quite up there, though. The biggest issue for me was that the the middle chapters weren't as strong. I'd assume this is due to Isaac having to transition from writing newspaper articles to writing a book. I would have preferred a more linear narrative, for example. Additionally, Isaac's providing a few sentences on background is perfectly acceptable for a newspaper article, but seems "jumpy" in a book. For instance, we've already been introduced to Plouffe (Uber's political strategist) in the prologue, no need to reiterate his resume in Chapter 12 - it's just an unnecessary "break" in the story for me.Other nits to pick: Isaac mentions that the term "unicorn" was coined in 2013 by a venture capitalist, but doesn't mention that venture capitalist's name (Aileen Lee) - a bummer for a book where the treatment of women in tech is a prominent subject. Also, I occasionally scratched my head at the author's apparent obsession with people's height - few of the characters escaped a comment on that topic, even when it seemed irrelevant to their story (with the exception of Bill Gurley, of course).I'm grateful for the read though, not least because it ends on what I think is an optimistic note. Isaac shows us glimpses of the seeds of redemption for Kalanick. I'm hopeful one day I'll read the book on that story too.

Five Stars as advertised.Thank you!Good textbook Needed this for my medical micro class. Used it mostly as a reference. The front of the chapter includes a helpful breakdown and even questions to help you brainstorm cases. The diagrams on parasite infections are exceptionally helpful, but the actual text can be hard to read. Its easily broken down into categories: pathology, disease, laboratory, treatment, prevent. Just the text tends to be much more dense and slightly confusing at times. I only used it as a reference really. Much more efficient to read the overview and then just read what you don't understand.best text on Micro Best microbiology text available on the market as a foundation. Forget Lippinoctt.
