Title: Wild Pdf From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

Wild is a powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an 1100-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe - and built her back up again.

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than "an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise." But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Strayed faced down rattlesnakes and black bears, intense heat and record snowfalls, and both the beauty and loneliness of the trail. Told with great suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

Animal neglect and animal murder This book is as much about the author's mother dying (and the aftermath) and her dysfunctional life as it is about the hike itself. Fine, that was all very interesting and well written, and I applaud the author for her honesty. After her mother died, I thought, "And who's looking after the family's animals? Horses and dogs and chickens. Pages and pages about her infidelities etc, and her regrets, and mother dying, but nothing about who then went to either re-home or look after the animals. At 49% in the book you find out what happened! The animals have "either died themselves" (no WONDER) and her mother's stunning thoroughbred horse Lady (who had saved her mother's life and been her pride and joy) ended up shot in a botched, agonizing murder by someone (her brother, while she watched on) who had never shot a horse before. Needless to say, the horse did not die straight away but keeled down on her knees in agony in a slow death. If the book had dedicated as many pages to the author's regret and disgust at these actions and the part she played, and a begging for forgiveness, I could have understood (maybe). But, no. It seemed that the author didn't agonize over this at all. Just mentioned it, as if she were blameless. As if she were the victim! Doing the one thing that would have BROKEN HER MOTHER'S HEART!A woman who had enough money to buy heroine but not enough to at least pay for a vet (and how about at least TRYING to re-home Lady or send her to a refuge? Not even mentioned. And all these readers, too, who have adored this book, did this not bother you?How sad this world we live in when shooting a horse who has been abandoned and mistreated by self-absorbed, selfish people seems to go completely unnoticed. If it is accepted so readily in this book, no wonder there is so much animal abuse out there.I actually thought I was going to hate this book I actually thought I was going to hate this book. I hated Eat, Pray, Love and this one came up on my list of recommendations after reading that but I gave it a try anyways. I am so glad that I did. This book was nothing like this "you have everything you've ever wanted in life but go try to find something else" books that are so popular these days. Cheryl writes in a way that really made me feel her own pain and her own fears and struggles. She captured grief in a way that I found very relatable. This story is one of failure, of mistakes, of mourning and above all of rising above all of those things to continue to carry on throughout life. I really loved it.A heck of a ride...er, walk There is something fascinating about the idea of going far away from everything and everyone you know, being alone in the world, and searching for who you really are in a setting where the only expectations are those you impose upon yourself. This is what Cheryl Strayed did in Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. One of the things she discovered is that the impulsivity and lack of direction which plagued her in her "real" life dogged her as she trekked the Pacific Crest Trail. She was both woefully unprepared for the challenges of the trail and almost laughably overprepared with a backpack that was, by her estimation, half her own weight.Fortunately, Cheryl met some good Samaritans along the way who helped to educate her in the art and science of backpacking and assisted her in editing the contents of her backpack to a more reasonable and sustainable level. She wrote frankly about her mistakes, miscalculations, and mishaps as she slowly made her way northward through the Mojave Desert to the Sierra Nevada mountain range (most of which she bypassed by hitchhiking because of record snowfall that year) and all the way up to the Bridge of the Gods at the Oregon/Washington border. As for the book itself, this is one of the few times I would recommend seeing the movie before reading the book, simply because the book is long and somewhat dense and if the movie doesn't appeal to you, the book probably won't, either. I enjoyed both the descriptions of the beauty and difficulty of hiking such a long way as well as the flashbacks of Cheryl's life before and how she came to make the decision - impulsively, as always - to take on this journey. She did educate herself about the gear she would need, apparently overly so, since she ended up with so much in her backpack she had to sit down, strap on the backpack, then get up on all fours and gradually move herself into a semi-upright position. However, although she bought a book about hiking the trail as well as one on navigating with a compass, she apparently just skimmed the first book and although she intended to read the second book on the plane from Minnesota to California, she did not do so. In fact, she didn't read the navigation book until she was actually lost, at which time she discovered she really didn't understand either the language or the principles the book contained.I will admit, the most difficult thing about reading this book besides its length and the density of the prose was dealing with Cheryl's character. I can only assume she was being honest about herself, since I don't believe anyone would portray themselves in such a negative light if it weren't the truth. Besides being heedless and impulsive, Cheryl betrayed, over and over again, a husband who seems to have had almost unlimited patience and love for her, even after their divorce. The loss of a loved one, especially one as close as Cheryl and her mother were, can cause people to react in strange and sometimes self-destructive ways. The best thing Cheryl did was to take herself out of the environment she was in and away from the temptations she found irresistible. But you know the old saying: Wherever you go, there you are. Cheryl was Cheryl, whether in Minnesota or on the PCT. The one thing she did do while on the trail was resist, almost to the very end, her rampant libido.I am glad I read this book. In a way, it reminds me of books I read years ago about people who had moved far away from civilization to live off the land. That, too, is an attractive and romantic prospect until you factor in the backbreaking labor involved. Most of the characters in those books were infinitely easier to like but far less memorable. Cheryl is certainly someone I will never forget

the mermaid's voice returns in this one Download

ISBN: 1449494161
Title: the mermaid's voice returns in this one Pdf
Author: Amanda Lovelace
Published Date: 2019-03-05
Page: 208

“This is a collection that lives and breathes #MeToo. Each poem isn't necessarily about sexual assault, but rather surviving sexual assault. The final in Lovelace's trilogy of poetry books "Women Are Some Kind of Magic," Lovelace poured herself into every single word of this collection.” (Marie Claire) having grown up a word-devourer & avid fairy tale lover, it was only natural that amanda lovelace would begin writing books of her own. so she did. when she isn’t reading or writing, she can be found waiting for pumpkin spice coffee to come back into season & binge-watching gilmore girls. (before you ask: team jess all the way.) the lifelong poetess & storyteller currently lives in new jersey with her spouse, their ragdoll cats, & a combined book collection so large it will soon need its own home. she is a two-time winner of the Goodreads Choice Award for best poetry as well as a USA TODAY & Publishers Weekly bestseller.

Goodreads Choice Award-winning poet and USA TODAY bestselling author Amanda Lovelace presents the mermaid’s voice returns in this one — the third and final installment in her “women are some kind of magic” series, featuring a foreword from Lang Leav and 13 guest poems from leading voices in poetry such as Nikita Gill, KY Robinson, and Orion Carloto.

The mermaid is known for her siren song, luring bedroom-eyed sailors to their demise. However, beneath these misguided myths are tales of escapism and healing, which Lovelace weaves throughout this empowering collection of poetry, taking you on a journey from the sea to the stars. They tried to silence her once and for all, but the mermaid’s voice returns in this one.

Rounds out the series well. 3.5/5 starsAs always, amanada lovelace’s poetry brings vivid imagery to the page, and continues to tell a similar story to Princess and Witch. Some of the major themes were harder to relate to than others because of my experiences in life, but that can be found in most poetry. This book is about staying strong and healing after trauma; that is okay to let yourself feel the pain and grow through it. Unlike the other two books in this collection, didn’t develop a strong connection to many of the poems. I did like that she had other authors cameo in Mermaid, but I just wished that they had been better spread out. It seemed like 85% of the cameo poems were in the last of the four sections, which threw off the flow of the writing for me. Overall, I think this is a good conclusion to a collection that has helped so many people acknowledge their trauma and heal from it.A Beautiful Conclusion Amanda Lovelace is my favorite author/poet. I was over the moon when I heard she was writing another book, and that it would be about MERMAIDS! Such a unique fantastical creature! Even so, I was worried I wouldn’t love it like I do her others, with an unhealthy intensity! However, my fears were unfounded because each poem hit me like a freight train. This is the most raw, personal poetry we’ve seen from her, and it takes guts to publish something like this where everyone can see it. This is more princess than witch, but it’s less anger and more plain truth. I would definitely recommend buying any of her books, but this was a beautiful conclusion to her Women Are Some Kind of Magic series!a beautiful conclusion This was beautuful and powerful and magical. Everything Amanda Lovelace is. The Women Are Some Kind of Magic series has been something I looked forward to since I read The Princess Saves Herself In This One the first time and Lovelace did not disappoint. I enjoyed everything about this beautiful and much needed collection, even the poems written by other talented people. It was marvelous and I shall read the whole series again someday.

Great recipes Enjoyed exploring the cookbook and plan to make many of the recipes. All the recipes look simple, tasty and satisfyingLooks good except for vegetarian recipes The veg recipes are probably tasty. However, with their heavy reliance on cheese, they are not healthy. The other recipes do look better.Intriguing Concept; Appetizing Dishes; BUT, Enhancements Would Help... I loved most everything about this cookbook. Here are the especially nice points:• The author has organized the book, and each recipe well• Each dish is accessible directly from the TOC or from the first page of each section• Each recipe includes information as to serving quantity; prep time; cook time; and other useful points.•She then includes a blurb about the dish, or her experiences/insight or whatever. This is a nice touch.Following the instructions, she includes a tip. For example, for Spiralized sweet potato nests with baked eggs, she advises how to freeze spiralized sweet potatoes and how to thaw them.Lastly, for each recipe, she provides the per-serving nutritional information.IMPROVEMENTS I WOULD LOVE TO SEE-Although several of the dishes do include color photographs (at the section divisions, not always at the specific dish), more photographs would enhance the layout and pique viewer interest, I think.More importantly, however, I think readability would be enhanced if the writer kept all text in black and white. Using colored text doesn’t work as well in Kindle, especially if the reader is using, say, a Kindle Paperwhite or some other, older model kindle reading device. Perhaps I am being picky here, but I am speaking my mind.BOTTOM LINE“The Healthy Sheet Pan Cookbook” by Ruthy Kirwan is a fresh new concept in home cooking that is so simple, I found myself wondering why nobody had worked this concept before now.Four stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. 12 Rules for Life Pdf

ISBN: B01FPGY5T0
Title: 12 Rules for Life Pdf An Antidote to Chaos
#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER
#1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER

What does everyone in the modern world need to know? Renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research.

Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.
What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful? Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 Rules for Life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.

The most influential book I have read this year! From a liberal. I will admit this right off the bat. I knew nothing of Jordan Peterson, or any of his ideology before reading this book. I must have existed in a vacuum, as I merely picked this book up as it was given as an "Amazon Recommends."Curious about the title, I purchased on impulse.I am very glad I did.I am not Jordan Peterson's "supposed" target audience. (I used supposed because I don't think he actually claims to have one).I am a liberal, Asian, left leaning moderate with a background in philosophy, theology and film studies. I support the women's right movement, equal pay, and I find the Republican party of today rather distasteful for the anti-science movement they espouse. That being said, this book spoke to me. It is not an easy read. I had to re-read chapters slowly to fully condense my thoughts. I agree with the critical review that stated you have to be intellectually equipped to really get the most out of this. I had to utilize my background in philosophy and religion to go beyond the surface of what the author was trying to say. This is not a book you can listen to at 2x speed on Audible and hope to retain anything, imo. You need to digest this. That being said...Peterson's deft weaving of theology, mythology, and just overall cogent arguments and viewpoints made me really respect and open up my mind to things I never fully thought about. I find it laughable that a Harvard professor/psychologist has been embraced by the "alt-right" when even a moderately close reading of this text repudiates all that they stand for.Peterson is direct. He has opinions. I don't always agree with them. But he is genuinely expressing himself, and the belief that we should all try to be better. We should all try to be more compassionate, and most of all, we all should try to understand our humanity a little more each and every there. There's no division in this book; there's just deep anguish at the current state of humanity and its capacity for evil. There's some exasperation at the way things are currently constructed in society that is in many ways lost. And most of all, there's compassion and a belief that if we all got together in a room and truly talked, the world would be a better place.I would shy away from the noise around Peterson in the headlines, on Youtube, and in how the idealogues use him (or even his own personal media narrative) to justify their twisted beliefs. Don't let the fact that the "Alt-Right" has co-opted this man to make him a mascot. Just read the book independently and make your own judgments. You'll be glad you did.Ugh. I tried. This book had so many excellent reviews.I just don’t understand.I was following nicely about lobsters and posture. It made sense.I ignored the tone, which was borderline yelling.I ignored the sweeping generalizations.I ignored the biblical passages that started to overtake every paragraph in a quasi word-salad way. I’ve studied the Bible since I could read. I know when something is off.I can only compare this book to a very long sermon, where I’m trying to follow along, and derive some wisdom. As the hours wear on, everyone is shaking their heads in agreement and I just want to go home. All I could hear were illogical statements that left zero room for elasticity and nuance. I am a human being. We all are. The author seems to set that aside and preach on...and on...and on.I felt alienated, confused and finally could take no more. I got up and left the church that this book pretends not to be.I could not have disliked this self-help book more.Never again.
